Shreyas Iyer’s recovery from a serious spleen injury has progressed faster than many expected, and he could return to international cricket for India’s three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11. His selection, however, hinges entirely on match fitness — something he must demonstrate in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy games for Mumbai.
Road to recovery
During India’s away tour of Australia, Iyer suffered a painful blow to his lower rib and spleen and was rushed to a Sydney hospital unconscious. Initial timelines suggested a return around the Indian Premier League, but Iyer has pushed hard to regain fitness. He began light training, moved on to full net sessions in Mumbai and reported to the BCCI Centre of Excellence over the Christmas period.
That determination has earned him a place in Mumbai’s Vijay Hazare Trophy squad, but the final call for the national side will depend on how he performs in competitive matches and how his body responds under game conditions.
Vijay Hazare Trophy: a short, crucial audition
Iyer is set to play two List A matches for Mumbai ahead of the ODI series — against Sikkim on January 6 and Himachal Pradesh on January 8. These matches are effectively a fitness trial: if he shows match readiness and can handle the workload without setbacks, he is expected to join the Indian squad in Vadodara ahead of the first ODI on January 11.
If fitness isn’t proven: Ruturaj Gaikwad waiting in the wings
If Iyer is unable to prove his match fitness in the Vijay Hazare fixtures, Ruturaj Gaikwad looks most likely to get the nod. Gaikwad was handed an opportunity during the recent home series in which both Shreyas and captain Shubman Gill were unavailable. Although the intention was to use him as an opener, he featured in the middle order for that series — the same position Iyer usually fills.
Ruturaj goes into contention on the back of strong domestic form, including a century in his final outing before being dropped from the national side. The selection committee is likely to add him to the ODI squad if Iyer is ruled out on fitness grounds.
What the selectors will look for
- Ability to withstand pace and intensity across two matches in quick succession.
- Timing, shot selection and judgment against both pace and spin.
- No lingering pain or risk signals from the previous injury area under match stress.
- Overall match sharpness: running between the wickets, quick singles, and fielding agility.

The next few days are pivotal for Iyer. A successful outing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy would hand India a settled middle-order option and a confident vice-captain for the short series. If not, Ruturaj Gaikwad will have a real chance to force his way back into the 50-over side.
