Fire outside Boland Park briefly disrupts attention during SA20 clash
A small fire broke out in the parking area just outside Boland Park during the SA20 match between the Paarl Royals and the Pretoria Capitals, causing a moment of concern for fans and players. The flames were put out quickly and the match continued without delay or reported damage.
What happened at Boland Park
The blaze started on the western side of the venue during the fourth over of the Paarl Royals’ chase. It appeared to be unrelated to the mountain fires that have been burning in the region earlier in the week. Firefighters had the situation under control by the seventh over and there were no reports of injuries or property damage.
Although stadium officials did not ask spectators to evacuate, many fans stepped outside to check on their cars after spotting the smoke. Images later showed scorched earth in the parking lot, while a thick curtain of smoke had already hung over the ground from the start of play.
“We did notice it. There have been a few fires around Pearl Valley (the accommodation used by Paarl Royals) in the last week or so. We were scrambling for DLS in case we had to get off the field. But if there’s anywhere in the world where the firefighters know what they’re doing, it’s here,” said Paarl Royals assistant coach Richard das Neves.
Match carried on as firefighters worked
Play was never halted. The fire brigade worked in the background while players and officials focused on the game. Pretoria Capitals captain Keshav Maharaj said he was unsure of the smoke’s exact origin but confirmed it was visible to his side throughout the match.
“A fire in the parking lot? Wow. There was a lot of smoke out there, so I just assumed it was from that. It’s very hot out there,” Maharaj commented.
On the field: Capitals defend 138 to claim victory
The Pretoria Capitals batted first after Maharaj won the toss and posted a competitive 138 for 9 in their 20 overs. Sherfane Rutherford anchored the innings with an unbeaten 42 off 35 balls.
- Pretoria Capitals 138/9 (20 overs) — Sherfane Rutherford 42*
- Paarl Royals 117/6 (20 overs) — David Miller 45, Rubin Hermann 35
Pretoria Capitals bowlers shared the wickets, with Keshav Maharaj finishing with impressive figures of 2 for 14 from his four overs. The Royals’ batting struggled on a testing pitch and the Capitals emerged winners by 21 runs.
Key performers
- Sherfane Rutherford (PC) — unbeaten 42, top scorer for the Capitals
- Keshav Maharaj (PC) — 2/14 with the ball and astute captaincy
- David Miller (PR) — fought with a top score of 45 for the Royals
- Rubin Hermann (PR) — contributed 35 in a challenging chase
Aftermath and outlook
The quick response from local firefighters meant the incident did not escalate or cause disruption to the match schedule. Teams, officials and supporters were able to leave the stadium safely after play concluded, and there were no reports of damage to vehicles or infrastructure.
As the SA20 moves on, organisers will doubtless review the circumstances around the parking-lot fire and remain alert amid the region’s recent spate of small blazes. On the field, the Pretoria Capitals will take confidence from an efficient bowling performance and a disciplined chase from Rutherford as they prepare for their next fixture.
